Wayanad : Mayakshetra in  Gods own Country.

Wayanad is a derivative of the term Vayal Nadu, where Vayal means Paddy fields and Nadu the land, comprising it to indicate a land of paddy fields.

Wayanad is one of the exquisite hill stations of Kerala. She is rich with mist clad mountains, intense forests and fertile green plantations. Quite a large area of the district is covered by forest. The place enjoys a pleasant climate almost whole year.

Wayanad has a unique history. She has the largest population of aborigine people in Kerala. They are known as "ADIVASIS". They are still far far away from the city civilization. They still follow the practice of living in dense forest. They hunt animals and eat raw fruits from the trees. They have rich treasures of their own traditions, art forms, medicines etc. Nowadays Government is trying to uplift their conditions, they are provided with houses, electricity, and many rules are passed for their empowerment.

The main livelihood of the people is agriculture and farming. Her climate make it ideal for the cultivation of coffee, tea, pepper and rubber.Almost all the family own a small estate having these crops. The harvesting period of these crops is the period of festival here. They make the quote "Hard Work Pays" true in this period.

wayanad is rich with beautiful tourist spots. The main natural spots include includes Banasura Hill, PookoteLake, Meenmutty Waterfalls,Kuruva Island, Soochipara,Kanthanpara Waterfall, Chembra Peak etc. You can easily get informations about all these in google on a click.

I would like to spot few places which doesn't have significant importance, but still very very beautiful.Being native of wayanad it will be a guilt if i didn't say about these places.I bet ,you will surely have fun in hearing the names of these places.

Moochikundu : This place in  the heart of wayanad i.e in Kalpetta, precisely near my home in Chuzhali.(LOL).It has a beautiful river, nature has given all its possible beauty to it.It is surrounded by forests and tea estates. The milk coloured water flows over the black and slippery rocks.the rocks are of various shapes and size. Some resembles warriors having sword while some others resembles some cute shapes. Am blessed to have shower in this river quite a large umber of times. We could easily hear the sounds of various birds here.

Mattam: I have always wondered and thrilled being here. This is a small ground on the top of a hill.it is surrounded by tea estates on all four sides, beyond that there lies dense forest.Beautiful trees are there on the sides were the children used to climb. The journey to this place is very exiting. You have to travel through a steep forest. You can also find a lot of monkeys on the way.

Mayiladipara:This is a huge rock situated not so far from the kalpetta town.It has a variety of trees on its bottom,a small river which has chilled water almost whole year. You also have a human built shelter on the top of the mountain. Not need to worry of sun burn. You can see students bunking the classes and resting here almost all days(LOL).

ChembakaMaram:This is a huge tree near chuzhali, which i have mentioned earlier.Kids used to consider this as a ghost. There are many stories which brings horror to our minds related this tree. The traditional "THEYYAM" is also celebrated near this tree once in a year.

KallamvettiKavu:This is a temple of the adivasis. It has a huge tree and few forms of deities surrounding it.People of this area consider this as a very powerful God. Even me.The rituals celebrated here is quite unique. The event will be happening at the midnight.Women are not allowed to watch this ceremony. The man performing the rituals will be known as "Komaram".He will be boozed heavily (almost all the people watching the ritual). The arrangements for the ceremony will bring fear to the minds of people watching this.Animal sacrifice will be done here. That too in a brutal way.By the early morning the ceremony will come to an end.People will cook the animals which they have sacrificed from the temple premises itself.

Wait for more about the unexplored wayanad.............
